The authorities want to reduce the burden on the island’s infrastructure
Ibiza authorities have unveiled a limit on the arrival of cruise ships in a popular tourist destination. The Council of Mayors announced that more than two cruise ships cannot be allowed in Ibiza at the same time in order to distribute the arrival of visitors and reduce the burden on the island’s infrastructure. “When more than two cruises arrive at the same time, the port and transportation services decline, which creates a problem for the city of Ibiza,” said Vicent Marie Torres, president of the Ibiza Council. “We are not against the arrival of cruises, but we ask that it happen in a more orderly and planned manner.” Last year, Ibiza, which is home to only 159,180 people, received a record number of cruise ship visitors — 548,969 people. Local residents have expressed concern about the impact of excessive tourism on the rental market, the island’s marine and wildlife, environment and culture.
